The US government eventually repatriated General Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda, former Secretary of Defense (SEDENA), who was accused of drug trafficking and money laundering by the Drug Control Agency (DEA) in 2017.
Prior to repatriation, the general was dropped from all charges against him after the United States and Mexico District Attorneys agreed to hand him over for investigation and, if detected crimes are found, to be prosecuted in Mexican territory. Cienfuegos was relocated on a charter flight from New Jersey to the international airport in the city of Toluca, about 60 kilometers from the country’s capital, where the bailiffs of the US Marhslas Service handed it over to employees of the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR).
The former defense minister is not accused of anything in Mexico. However, Mexican agents informed him that there is an open investigation folder against him based on the DEA allegations. The general underwent a routine medical examination and then left the scene, presumably at home.
In a statement released around 9 p.m. on Wednesday evening, the FGR stated that it arrived at the Attorney General’s (FGR) hangar at Toluca Airport, State of Mexico, at 6:40 p.m. that day, the Gulfstream 4 aircraft, registration N40VC, the US government coming from New Jersey Airport. Once the plane arrived, the reception tasks were carried out. At 6.48 p.m., the general department head in Retiro, former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda, got off in formal clothes and a tie, the text says.
According to his parentage, he was taken to a private room in the offices of the above-mentioned FGR hangar, where, with his consent, a medical examination was carried out to check his health on his arrival in that country. that was cheap. Thereafter, the agent of the Public Ministry of the Federation officially informed General Cienfuegos of the existence of an investigation he was involved in. Folder initiated by this FGR with the information received from the United States Department of Justice and from now on the investigation into the FGR will be in charge of the Mexican authorities.
General Cienfuegos has been notified and given all of his personal and contact information, including address and mobile phone, where he can be found and asked about the procedures that may take place and ordered the Federation Public Ministry, expressing his full readiness Meet the requirements of the investigation. The FGR stated that General Cienfuegos Zepeda withdrew from the offices of the FGR in the hangar of Toluca, State of Mexico, at 7:12 p.m., thereby ending the relevant ministerial proceedings.
General Cienfuegos was arrested on October 15 in Los Angeles, California and charged by the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) with three drug trafficking violations and one money laundering.
After three hearings before North American judges, the United States Attorney General asked the judge in the case, Carol Beagley Amon, to dismiss all charges so that the general can be investigated in Mexico and prosecuted in his case.
The petition arose following an agreement with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) to repatriate the former secretary because his arrest violated the cooperation agreements between the two countries and seriously violated confidence in the continuation of the common struggle in organized crime, which affects both nations.
Judge Amon ruled on this Wednesday and accepted the prosecutor’s motion in her country and ordered the dismissal of all charges, so the general was transferred from the US Marshal Service to Mexico, which happened this afternoon. (Jorge Alejandro Medelln)
