The lawyer Nuria Esparch Fernández, new Defense Minister of Peru and the first woman in the position-Noticias

After the resignation of the short-lived President Manuel Merino de Lama, the new President of Peru, Francisco Sagasti, swore in lawyer Nuria Esparch Fernndez as Minister of Defense and Ismael Ruben Vargas Cespedes as Minister of the Interior.

Nuria del Roco Esparch Fernndez, the first woman in the country to take over the Ministry of Defense, was born on January 19, 1969 in Lima. She studied law at the Pontificia Universidad Catlica del Peru. He holds a Masters in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizen and Public Affairs at the University of Syracuse (New York, USA). During her professional career, she was Secretary General in the Ministries of Agriculture (2001-20023), Labor and Employment Promotion (2004-2005) and Women and Social Development (2005-2006) as well as advisor to the Deputy Ministry of the Interior. In 2006 he became Deputy Minister of Administration and Economy (currently called Defense Resources) at the Ministry of Defense. In late 2008, she was named Executive President of the National Civil Service Authority (SERVIR), a position she held until February 2011. From 2014 to 2018 she was the institutional relations manager at Constructora Graa y Montero.

For his part, Ismael Rubn Vargas Cspedes is an outstanding specialist in security and drug trafficking issues with a Masters degree in Constitutional Law from the Pontificia Universidad Catlica del Peru. He holds courses in human rights (Germany), civil security and police reform (Chile), and counter-terrorism and drug trafficking (USA). From 1996 to 2000 he worked for the Ombudsman conducting a series of investigations into human rights violations, monitoring and analyzing social conflicts, and illegal mining activities. Between 2001 and 2005 he was an advisor to the Ministry of the Interior. In 2018 he was appointed Executive President of the National Commission for Development and a Life Without Drugs (DEVIDA), a position he resigned after the political crisis in the country and which culminated in the demonstrations last weekend.
