The company is exhibiting the last Convair 580 in the world that is still on regular flights

Air Chathams, the official company of the Chathams Islands in New Zealand, announced the end of operations with the classic Convair 580 (CV-580). The airline was the last in the world to still have the turboprop, which was no longer manufactured in regular service in the 1950s.

The company had already planned to suspend Convair 580 flights between 2021 and 2022, but the crisis caused by the new coronavirus anticipated plans. Air Chathams operated three Convair 580s, one with a full configuration for 50 passengers, a second with a full freighter and the third with a mixed configuration.

The CV-580 have been part of the company’s fleet since it opened in 1984. The model was used on flights to destinations such as Auckland and Manapouri in New Zealand and Tuvalu in the South Pacific. The operation needs to be replaced with the new ATR 72-500 that the company has acquired.

The twin-engine turboprop is a modernized version of the Convair 340 and 440. They were manufactured between 1947 and 1956 by Consolidated Vultee (Convair), which ceased operations in 1996. The project arose from an order from American Airlines to replace a pressurized aircraft, the Douglas DC-3.

The Air Chathams website reports that it is the fastest turboprop in New Zealand, with “generous seats and legroom, with large windows for viewing”.

The specifications of the model on the company’s website indicate a speed of 520 km / h, a maximum altitude of 25,000 feet, a pressurized cabin, 2 pilots and 1 flight attendant, a configuration of up to 50 seats with on-board service and bathroom.

The Chathams Islands are about 800 km off the coast of New Zealand and have about 700 inhabitants. In addition to the three CV-580s, the Air Chathams fleet consists of a Cessna 206, an ATR 72-500 and three Saab 340s as well as three nostalgic Fairchild Metroliners and a Jurassic Douglas DC-3.
