Russia has started research and development on new weapons to replace the Iskander tactical missile system. As announced by Lieutenant General Mikhail Matveyevsky, commander of the missile and artillery forces, the Iskander-M will meet all requirements for a long time and will remain the basic weapon of the missile and artillery forces until at least 2030. As of the future weapon, we can say that there are already many substantial scientific bases for this development. Less than half of the Iskander-M’s modernization potential has been exhausted, he admitted.
This family was developed by the KBM Design Office in Kolomna, Moscow, a subsidiary of the High-Precision Weapons (HPW) holding company. Russia is currently conducting scientific work on the concepts of advanced missile artillery weapons. At the same time, efforts are being made to improve existing weapon systems.
Artillery forces have received medium-caliber multi-launch Tornado-G missile systems and upgraded Tornado-S launch vehicles, the general said. Both are the newest derivative of the 300mm Smerch. from SPLAV who is in Tula. Another potential for these armed forces is the Beyond-the-Horizon intelligent missile weapon system, which was developed by another HPW subsidiary, the Shipunov KBP Design Bureau, also based in Tula.
According to the manufacturer, the Hermes is a next generation system that occupies a niche between guided burlap bowls and operational tactical systems. The Iskander-M is designed to hit small targets and large installations, including rocket launchers, multiple rocket launchers, long-range artillery and airfields, command posts and communication facilities at a distance of up to 500 km (Yury Laskin, correspondent of the Grupo Edefa in Moscow).
