Leonardo’s new radio frequency radio in the United States Navy’s Northrop Grumman E-2D

Leonardo won an order with Northrop Grumman to provide the SRT-400, its new radio frequency (HF) radio system, for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye fleet of early warning and control aircraft for the US Navy. Leonardo has been involved in the development and manufacture of RF antenna systems for decades. Leonardo’s experience in this field dates back to 1970 when thousands of previous generations RT-170 (170 W), RT-270 (200 W) and RT-470 (400 W) were sold to customers around the world.

The company has made the design and production of the latest generation HF single sideband system SRT-400 suitable for propeller and fixed wing aircraft. Leonardo’s patented technology reduces TX power consumption by more than 40% compared to previous designs, minimizing heat dissipation and greatly improving reliability. Both transceivers can be connected to several Antenna Tuning Units (ATUs) that can be combined with all types of existing antennas.

The SRT-400 and its variant with lower power, the SRT-200, combine high flexibility and simplified operation in a package with reduced size and weight, which is achieved through an innovative mechanical and electrical design. Variants of the E-2 Hawkeye have been in service since the early 1960s. It provides early warning and command and control in the air in any weather, from the ship or from the ground, and detects and tracks targets at greater distances in deep water, on coasts and in coastal land environments.
