The F-5E (single-seat) and F-5F (two-seat) fighters were taken over by the Brazilian Air Force in the 1970s. The modernization program focuses on equipping the aircraft with the latest generation of electronic warfare systems and greater operational capacity. Extending the life of the aircraft by at least another 15 years.

The Brazilian manufacturer was responsible for updating 49 aircraft, implementing new electronic systems, multifunctional displays, electronic countermeasures, a new multimode radar and the ability to deploy more modern armaments, all of which are integrated and managed by embedded software and mission computers.

With the modernization, the aircraft will remain the FAB’s main attack vector until the new SAAB F-39 Gripen NG fighters arrive and replace the F-5.
